Environmental Management Operational Activities

DRB carries out various activities for effective climate change response and green management.
DRB has calculated its greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) and completed a 3rd party verification, and currently tries to perform Scope 3 calculation. In addition, we make conscious efforts to achieve energy saving goals through various methods, such as replacing the florescent lights to LED in all workplaces and installing high-efficiency transformers. To reduce air pollutant emissions, we have changed oil-base coatings to water-base coatings, completely, and have installed and/or expanded odor reduction facility (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) and emission prevention facility (dust collection system). DRB green management divides its waste into general waste, water pollutant substances, and harmful chemicals for effective waste management. In particular, for general waste materials, we avoid landfilling and incineration and instead try to increase recycling through outsourcing contracts with recycling companies. For water quality management, we install waste water, both industrial and domestic, recollecting system to filter and reuse the wastewater. In the case of harmful chemicals (Toluene), we try to reduce the discharge of harmful chemical substances by converting to more eco-friendly materials (water-based solutions). Finally, we cooperate with government and public agencies in environmental issues and thus contribute to the activation of environmental conservation and sustainability projects of the communities.

DRB’s Environmental Risk Prevention Activities

DRB carries out various preventive activities to minimize environmental risks. First, DRB provides HR competency improvement education for air quality/water quality/waste/chemicals/soil management/energy saving and climate response activities. Also, we have finished the calculation of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission amount and a 3rd party verification, and set out the GHG reduction goals and management system foundation, and saved the energy costs through energy reduction proposals and implementation thereof. We comply with the environmental standards for water quality and soil contamination and monitor the conditions regularly. In addition, we are trying to increase the recycling ratio of raw and supplementary materials and waste, and expect to reduce the air pollutant emissions through the expansion of the air pollution prevention facility and the improvement of the production process. To reduce the generation of harmful waste in the manufacturing and processing stage and the treatment thereof, we make efforts to find eco-friendly alternatives.
DRB establishes annual goals to prevent and block serious environmental risks and monitors the progress semi-annually, and reports the performance of environmental management and the monitoring results to the CEO. Also, we report the environmental demands of internal and external stakeholders, issues, and factors that are likely to affect environments to the top decision-makers of the Company and set out a corrective measure for improvement.
Beyond that, DRB provides partner companies with educations about waste management, chemicals treatment, energy saving, and climate response and carries out relevant campaigns for effective risk management of its supply chain, as well as promotes mutual growth and cooperation. To leave sustainable environments to the next generations, as a corporate citizen, DRB signed an MOU for Resource Circulation and Sustainable Environments with the Korea Environment Corporation in 2021 and actively engages in development and distribution of resource circulation education programs for the future generations.

DRB’s Green Management Activities

In accordance with the eco-friendly energy policies which have become stricter since the Paris Climate Agreement, companies are exercising environmental management in various forms, including expansion of renewable energy use.
Also, the environmental management capability of a company is now taken as essential criteria when major financial institutions examine their investee companies. As the awareness of various stakeholders, including consumers, local communities, and civil groups changes, the companies are required to reduce their environmental impact factors and to minimize the usage of resources and harmful substances throughout entire business activities from production to consumption and disposal.
With Zero Emission, Zero Waste and Zero Impact as the key strategies, DRB operates an environmental management system based on its strategic system, and performs proactive and structured activities, such as development and sale of eco-friendly products and environmental management operational activities.
Also, DRB identifies environmental issues of different stakeholders from the project planning stage and thus prepares a responsive measure in advance, as well as unifies the reporting system under the Environmental Management Committee which has the C-Level decision making authority and thus manages environmental issues in an integrated manner. In detail, DRB establishes practical task plans, makes investments to implement the plans, and monitors the performance results of each environmental activity.
At the same time, the Company supports DRB partners to improve their environmental management capability and provides partners that achieve excellent evaluation results with incentives in procurement process. Finally, through a timely and accurate disclosure of the environmental management performance, DRB maintains its environmental management activities transparent to all stakeholders.

1. Emission Reduction and Climate Change Response

Carbon Asset Management System

DRB operates a carbon management system in its domestic business places, and monitors the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by business place, facility and measurement system. The Company practices integrated management by comparing the emission plans, and estimated and actual emissions of each facility. Also, through the reduction simulations created annually in reflection of various elements, such as production output, emission plan, emission estimates, and reduction projects, the Company is planning to implement its greenhouse gas reduction activities, systematically. In 2021, DRB completed the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions in all business places, both domestic and overseas and checked out the company-wide carbon emission states. Based on the results, DRB will continue carbon emission reduction activities for an effective climate change response.

Air Pollutant Discharge Management

DRB has replaced outdated air pollution prevention facilities and thus increased the efficiency of pollutant treatment. Before expanding the production line, DRB performs the environmental impact assessment and calculates the air pollutant generation in advance to install an additional prevention facility. Through such effort, we manage air pollutants in all our production lines, safely. Moreover, we have fully updated RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) in accordance with the enhanced emission standards, domestic and overseas, and apply our own emission standards that are stricter than the legal requirements.

Use of Renewable and Waste Energy

DRB has installed solar energy generation facility on the rooftops of business places, both domestic and overseas, to expand the use of renewable energy, and by consuming the power generated inside reduces not only the electricity purchase but also the indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2). In addition, by reusing waste energy generated from factory processes, the Company decreases fossil fuel usage.

Eco-friendly Products and Technology – Emission Reduction and Climate Change Response

DRB recognizes the importance of climate change response and reduces the emissions generated from its production stage directly, while trying to make a proper climate change response at the end user level, too. To realize this goal, DRB develops and manufactures products that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in all of its business sectors.

2. Resource Conversation

Reduction of Raw and Supplementary Material Use

DRB attempts to minimize the new purchase of raw and supplementary materials by optimizing the inventory and managing the usage, internally. Specifically, DRB conducts research and development of waste reduction technology and process, and decreases the material purchase from the production stage to the release through various efforts, such as reducing the input of new oil solutions by lowing the loss rate through prevention of the scattering of oil solutions and fire-flakes in the production process, replacing storage materials with high-strength ones, and increasing the number of re-use.

Reduction of Water Usage

DRB minimizes water use through close cooperation with the production line and processes. Also, to increase recycled water usage, such as purified water or water from cleaning and firefighting, DRB establishes and operates water recycling facilities and processes. By recollecting and reusing the water used in the production processes, we can reduce the overall water usage and increase the water recycling ratio. DRB is planning to establish a sustainable water recycling and reusing system in the future.

Recycling and Reuse

In collaboration with customers, DRB recollects the packaging materials used for the product release and reuses them to reduce the package waste and the consumption of new packaging materials. In addition, through waste recycling outsourcing contracts with waste recycling and treatment companies, DRB is increasing its own recycling ratio in the production stages.

3. Minimizing Negative Impacts

Management of Chemical Substances

DRB prevents chemicals-related accidents by eliminating harmful and dangerous elements in the entire course of chemical usage, namely from the adoption and application to sales and disposal of chemicals, from the perspective of ESH management. The Company also makes the submission of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) mandatory for all business places, domestic and overseas, upon purchasing chemical substances and solutions that contain chemicals, and provides educations concerning treatment, management and awareness of dangerous chemicals.

As a preemptive action, DRB, in addition to the regular inspections required by laws, conducts internal inspections of harmful chemical storage and warehouse systems on a monthly basis, and identifies and reports the risks that can occur in the course of purchasing, storing, treating and using harmful chemicals through external impact assessment and risk management plans. At the same time, DRB provides all employees with educations related to chemical substances at least once a year, including the training program for personnel in charge of chemical substance handling and chemical safety education, in both domestic and overseas workplaces.

Waste Resource Management and Reduction Activity

DRB reduces waste resource generation not only by minimizing the process waste but also through resource circulation by recycling waste materials. DRB complies with the waste treatment method prescribed by applicable laws to track the transport of waste, and decides optimal waste treatment methods depending on the types and quantity of waste generated from the business operation. Through such activities, the Company tries to increase the waste recycling and reusing, and to build an upcycling ecosystem which can creates values from waste resources based in its own resource circulation management system.

Ecological Environment Purification Activity

Under the initiatives of its own members, both the executive and the staff levels, DRB regularly conducts environmental purification activities over the surrounding ecological environments, such as parks and green zones around the factories.

4. Eco-Friendly Technology Development

DRB recognizes the environmental impacts in all production activities, from the procurement of raw materials to the completion of final product, and makes a conscious effort to minimize the impacts. In this aspect, DRB is determined to explore elements that can reduce environmental impacts continuously, expand the implementation of improvement methods, and apply new eco-friendly technologies, actively.
